What does a Hawaii-born ex-sommelier and restaurateur do in his "golden" years? He moves into a cottage in the middle of ancient vine California vineyards, makes new friends among the local grape growers and winemakers, and writes a book.
On March 23, 2022, Randy Caparoso — one of the Roy's restaurants' founding partners (retired since 2001) — returns to the scene of the original Roy's Restaurant in Eastern Honolulu in the company of four of his favorite Lodi, California winemaker/growers, who will take part in an extravagant multi-course winemaker dinner at Roy's Hawaii Kai. The vintners will include Greg La Follette (Marchelle Wines), Mike McCay (McCay Cellars), Steve Felten (Klinker Brick Winery), and Melinda Kearney (Lorenza True Rosé). The winemakers will be pouring a dozen and a half different wines at each event.
Says Caparoso, "When I saw my old boss, Roy Yamaguchi, in Santa Barbara last fall, I told him that I was about to come out with 'a book.' Within a second, Roy said, 'Then you have to come back to Hawaii to debut it!' I couldn't agree more."
Adds Caparoso, "I lived and worked in Hawaii for the first 42 years of my life. But opening more than a dozen different Roy's locations from San Francisco to New York gave me a taste of the wide open spaces of the Mainland. No matter where you go, of course, nothing beats the beauty of Hawaii, or the aloha of its people. It will be good to be back to see the old ohana, and to also the share the joy I am now getting living in the heart of one of California's oldest and most historic wine regions."
